The Inge Center's Playwrights-in-the-Schools program places two professional playwrights in a rural public school to teach playwriting during extended residencies. It is one of a handful of similar programs in the nation to serve rural students. Support for this program includes grants from the Kansas Arts Commission. The program has been demonstrated to enhance students' ability to communicate their thoughts in a positive manner and aid in their ability to learn and function cooperatively in the classroom and society. Playwrights-in-the-School programs also increase the student's academic achievement and expertise in self-expression. The program concludes each semester with a reading of the students' new plays, allowing the young writers to hear their works performed before a live audience. Check the upcoming events section for dates of the readings, which take place each semester.
The program has included residencies at the following Southeast Kansas schools: Cherryvale High School, Elk Valley High School of Longton, Field Kindley High School of Coffeyville, Independence High School, Labette County High School of Altamont, Sedan High School, and SEK Academy of Independence.
