Garson Kanin
Garson Kanin
has been called "The Man-for-All-Theatre Seasons." He is a celebrated
playwright, (Born Yesterday, The Rat Race, The Gift of Time),
director, (Idiot's Delight, Funny Girl, The Diary of Anne Frank),
librettist, (Fledermaus), film writer and director, (Bachelor
Mother, Adam's Rib, Pat and Mike, The True Glory, for which he won
the Academy Award). He has written numerous articles which have been
published in newspapers and periodicals as well as non-fiction, (Tracy
and Hepburn) and fiction, (Moviola, Smash).
Mr. Kanin attended the "Dinner with Broadway Theatre Legends" on
Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Independence Country Club and
participated in "Meet our Award-winning Playwrights" with the topic "The
Changing American Theatre" on Monday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon
in the Inge Theatre. Mr. Kanin received the 1987 "William Inge Award for
Lifetime Achievement in the American Theatre" during a tribute to him on
April 6, 1987 at 7:30 p.m. in the William Inge Theatre and was the guest
of honor at the "After-Theatre Supper with Garson Kanin" on Monday,
April 6 at 10:00 p.m. at the Independence Country Club.

WITH BROADWAY LEGENDS. Special guests included actresses Barbara Baxley
and Marian Seldes, award-winning playwrights Garson Kanin, John Patrick,
Jerome Lawrence, and Robert Anderson. Special musical entertainment was
provided by Marcy DeGonge. Independence Country Club.

Garson Kanin, author of Born Yesterday and the 1987 recipient of
The William Inge Award for Lifetime Achievement in the American Theatre.
Responding to Mr. Kanin was Robert Anderson (Tea and Sympathy),
Jerome Lawrence (Inherit the Wind) and John Patrick (The
Teahouse of August Moon.) Jackson Bryer, University of Maryland,
moderated the questions and answer period. William Inge Theatre, Fine
Arts Building.

attended the "Dinner with Broadway Theatre Legends" on Saturday, April 4
at 7:00 p.m. at the Independence Country Club. He joined Mr. Kanin at
the "Meet Our Award-Winning Playwrights" with the topic "The Changing
American Theatre" on Monday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon in the
Music Hall and conducted "A Playwright's Workshop" on Monday at 1:30
p.m. in the Fine Arts Building.

Barbara Baxley
is a talented actress of the New York Theatre, motion pictures,
television, and regional theatre. Broadway credits include Plaza
Suite, She Loves Me, The Three Sisters, and Period of Adjustment.
Film credits include Nashville, Norma Rae, No Way To Treat A Lady,
and East of Eden. Ms. Baxley conducted "How an Actress Prepares
for the Professional Theatre" on Monday, April 6 at 9:15 a.m. in the
Inge Theatre and was a special guest at the "Dinner with Broadway
Theatre Legends" on Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Independence
Country Club.
Kathryn Bryer,
Round House Theatre in Washington, D.C. conducted a two-day workshop in
Children's Theatre at the Independence Middle School.
Wally Cedar,
veteran publicist for actors and their productions who has his own
public relations firm in Beverly Hills, presented "Publicizing and
Promoting Your Productions" with Rick Miramontez on Monday, April 6, at
1:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

talented singer/actress from New York City, provided the headline
entertainment for "Dinner with Broadway Theatre Legends" on Saturday,
April 4 and again Monday, April 6 at the "After-Theatre Supper with
Garson Kanin," at the Independence Country Club. She also took part in
the tribute to Garson Kanin on April 6 in the William Inge Theatre.

Marian Seldes
is a Tony Award-Winning actress, with extensive acting credits in the
New York City theatre, regional and summer stock, motion pictures, radio
and television drama. She received Tony Awards for her performances in
The Ginger Man and A Delicate Balance. Other performances
in N.Y.C. included roles in Equus and Deathtrap. Miss
Seldes is on the staff of the Julliard School of Music in N.Y.C. where
she teaches acting. Ms. Seldes is the author of The Bright Lights, A
Theatre Life, an intimate memoir about the serious business of
acting as a profession and an art. Ms. Seldes was special guest at the
"Dinner with Broadway Theatre Legends" on Saturday, April 4 at 7:00 p.m.
at the Independence Country Club and she conducted "An Actor's Workshop"
on Tuesday, April 7, at 9:00 a.m.

presented "William Inge and the Critics" on Monday, April 6 at 8:15 a.m.

Walter Willison
and Joanna Rush (Lehmann) of New York City returned to the
William Inge Festival and starred in, "Two For One" in the William Inge
Theatre on Sunday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. Billed as "An Evening in
Concert," Miss Rush was featured in her one-woman show in Act I and Mr.
Willison was featured with songs from his personal musical successes in
Act II. This was Willison's fourth year as a participant and the second
year for Miss Rush. In 1985 the two appeared on the stage of the Inge
Theatre in Options, an original musical by Willison and Jeffery
Silverman.
