Since 2002, each spring and fall, we bring two playwrights at a time to Independence, KS, hometown of William Inge.  The playwrights live in William Inge's home (settings for Dark at the Top of the Stairs, Picnic).  The residencies are typically nine weeks long.  There is a teaching component to the residency; the playwrights teach one course at the Independence Community College and one at a local high school. Playwrights receive a stipend, housing and travel to and from Independence.
 

All current and past Inge House Playwrights-in-Residence are accomplished professionals in the field. They each have had productions and readings at prominent theaters across the nation and abroad, as well as numerous major awards and fellowships.

 Playwrights applying should have at least three professional productions of their plays and, ideally, some teaching experience at the college or high school level.  The materials we will need for consideration are: 1. a cover letter, 2. bio, 3.resume (complete with references and teaching experience), 4. a writing sample (a representative play), 5. a description of the project(s) you expect to work on while in residence and 6. availability over the next two years.  You may submit these materials via e-mail attachment if you prefer: info@ingecenter.org or mail to PO Box 708, Independence, KS  67301.  Please allow a minimum of 90 days for a response.
