Festival Recap

The 22nd William Inge Theatre Festival was a rousing event, called by many guests and participants, "the best ever."  The Inge Festival week began on Wednesday with an heartfelt musical tribute to Adolph Green "Comes Once in A Lifetime" filled with laughter, romance and a few tears.  Our Honoree, Romulus Linney, lead the stellar cast in a reading of Inge's "Bus Stop" on Thursday evening.  The Independence Reporter called this reading the "best production of the play" they had ever seen anywhere on stage or film.  Friday night's Gala dinner featured a soul-stirring performance by Grammy and Emmy-winning songwriter Michael Silversher, with a select group of our best local singers joining him in his ode to peace, "A Simple Prayer."  Saturday morning welcomed a passionate reading of New Voices playwright Theresa Rebeck's haunting play "The Bells."  Saturday evening capped off the festival with a panoramic multi-media tribute to Romulus Linney, the playwright's playwright.

Throughout the week, our guests and patrons participated in over twenty workshops and panels.  High school students joined Elderhostel guests and working professionals in panels ranging from Playwriting to Performing Shakespeare, from Children's Musicals to Playwriting, from directing to making it in New York or LA to reflecting on the life and works of William Inge.  A Highlight of the week was the incredible conversation that took place Friday morning between Romulus Linney and Actor/Author/Director Austin Pendleton.  That event alone was worth the price of admission.

At Saturday Evening's tribute to Romulus Linney, we also announced our honoree and dates for next year, Arthur Laurents.  Our 25th honoree, Mr. Laurents wrote "West Side Story," "Gypsy," "Home of the Brave," "A Clearing in the Woods," and for film, "The Way We Were" and "The Turning Point."  The dates for the next Inge Festival are:  April 21-24, 2004.  Save the date.

Memorabilia from this year's festival is available on this site.
