Grammy-winning Composer Michael Silversher

in concert and teaching workshops

at Independence Community College

Grammy-winning composer Michael Silversher will perform a concert of his wide-ranging musical styles Sunday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. at the William Inge Theatre at Independence Community College, Kansas.

Silversher earned the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Children’s recording with Music for Sony/Henson’s “Elmo in Grouchland.”  He was the founding/resident composer, musical director, and resource artist for Robert Redford’s Sundance Playwrights’ Lab and Children’s Theatre, a position he held for many years.  Silversher has written more than 100 songs for the Disney companies.  His work in television includes “The Little Mermaid,” “Duck Tales,” “Chip ‘N’ Dales Rescue Rangers,” “Alladin: the Return of Jafar” and “All Dogs go to Heaven.”  He has also co-written seven children’s stage musicals.

Silversher’s visit is funded in part by a “Meet the Composer” grant from the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

In addition to the concert, Silversher will conduct two composing workshops.  The first, open to the general public, will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, 12 noon, at the Independence Community College Music Hall, Fine Arts Building 101.  The second composing workshop will be at Independence High School.

Silversher will also compose original music for the William Inge Theatre Festival’s 24-Hour Plays, which are performed Saturday, Sept. 6, at ICC.  More than 60 students and instructors at 15 colleges from across five states gather that weekend to create, rehearse, and perform entirely new productions in just one day’s time.

This will be the composer’s second visit to Independence.  He was a special guest presenter in April at the annual William Inge Theatre Festival, where he also directed a community chorus in the premiere of his composition “A Simple Prayer.”

Tickets to the Silversher concert on Sunday Sept. 7 are $5 general and $3 students.

Admission to the 24-Hour Plays, Saturday, Sept. 6, is $5.

For more information on the Silversher concert, composing workshops, or the 24 Hour Plays, call (800) 842-6063, ext. 4216.

2003 Inge Festival Honoree: Romulus Linney

Romulus Linney, whose acclaimed plays have captured the spectrum of American life, from the soul of his native Appalachia to contemporary New York City, is the recipient of the William Inge Theatre Festival’s 2003 Distinguished Achievement in the American Theatre Award. The Festival will be held April 9-12, in Independence, Kansas, at Independence Community College.

“We are very excited to honor a playwright with a truly American voice. Linney’s prodigious work is greatly revered by his fellow playwrights,” said Peter Ellenstein, Director of the William Inge Theatre Festival, which is held annually at Independence Community College, in Independence, Kansas. “Fifteen of our past honored playwrights helped choose this year’s honoree, and yet Linney’s name is still not familiar to most Americans. We hope this well-deserved honor helps, in a small way, to introduce more of the public to Linney’s unique contributions to the American Theatre.”
